Everything You Need to Know About Voting in New Mexico

Having the opportunity to vote and choose your elected officials are is a great privilege. For many, the process can sometimes be overwhelming or confusing. Viante wants to make voting a straight-forward process so you know exactly where and when to vote, what you need to vote on, and where you can get nonpartisan information on candidates and issues.

Being  an educated voter is a crucial part of democracy. Viante gives you the resources to consider what to think about, not who to vote for or to what to think.

Make Sure You Are Registered To Vote

Not sure if you are registered to vote in New Mexico, or if your voter registration is up to date? Do a quick check before you head to the polls. It’s easy to check, you just need to provide the following:

• First and Last Name
• Date of Birth
• County You Live In

The deadline to register to vote ahead of time in the 2022 General Election is October 11th, 2022. You can register online here. After this date you can register in person at the County Clerk’s Office and various early voting locations.

Decide HOW You Want to Vote

It is entirely YOUR CHOICE to vote by absentee by mail or in person via early voting or election day voting. 

How you decide to exercise your right to vote in the general election is personal and private. As such, here is important information to know about your options.

Absentee Voting 

• In New Mexico, any registered voter can request their absentee ballot of vote, absentee, in person at their local County Clerk’s office or early voting location prior to Election Day. An excuse is not required nor is a notary signature. For more information on absentee or mail-in voting watch, this webinar Viante hosted before the 2020 Primary Election.
• Requesting an Absentee Ballot

  • Contacting your Country Clerk’s Office in person, phone, mail or email
• Important Absentee Voting dates
  • October 11th, 2022: Absentee Ballots start to be sent out 
  • October 11th, 2022 through October 21st, 2022: In-person Absentee voting at County Clerk Offices
• Absentee ballots can allow you more time with your ballot to research the candidates and issues. But, absentee voters need to be careful to mail their ballots back in time to be counted. Ballots must be received before Election Day, Tuesday November 8th, 2022.
  • Forget to mail your ballot back in time? No worries! You can drop off your ballot at your county clerk’s office or any early or election day voting site.
• Extra precautions are being taken to secure absentee ballots. You will need to fill it out according to the instructions, including writing your signature and the last four digits of your social security number on the sealed envelope. Your ballot will also be given an intelligent barcode to give you the ability to track your ballot online.

Early In-Person Voting 

• Early voting allows voters more time to get to the polls and cast their votes. Each county has a different number of sites and hours of operation. Make sure that whichever Early Voting location you choose to use is in the county you are registered to vote in.

  • Tuesday, October 11th, 2022 Early In-Person voting begins at County Clerks Office
  • Saturday, October 22nd, 2022 through November 5th, 2022 Expanded Early Voting at alternate voting locations
• Find an early voting location near you by visiting NMVote.org and click Find My Election Information

Election Day Voting 

• In accordance with American tradition, the election is on the first Tuesday in November from 7 am to 7 pm. This year, Election Day is on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022.
• Election day voting location can be found here. You can vote at any location in your registered county.

Absentee Voting

Where: Request an Absentee Ballot first, then it will be mailed  to you
When: 10/11/22 – 11/2/22
How: You will have to begin by requesting an absentee ballot either in-person at your County Clerk’s office or by filling out an application online prior to election day.

Early Voting

Where: Find a Location Near You
When: 10/11/22 – 11/5/22
How: You can go to any voting location within your county to cast your vote. If you have any questions, you can contact your county clerk.

What You Need To Vote

Voting in person? Here’s what you need to bring with you. 

• First-time voter: a physical form of ID is only required if you registered by mail and did not include identification with the voter registration application form.
• If you are not a first-time voter: you only need to bring yourself! You will have to provide a verbal or written statement of identification including your name, year of birth & registered address (find out what address you registered under).
• Bring your ballot worksheet. We provide resources for you  to research your ballot prior to getting in the voting booth down below. Print those out and bring them with you so you can know who and what you are voting on.
