Tackling New Mexico’s Education Problem
Tackling New Mexico’s education problem is a big task. But, our lawmakers are working on solutions. In order to help improve our state’s success in education, Viante has selected metrics that help us grade and track the improvement of one of New Mexico’s most important issues.
We focus on the quality of our Pre-K programs in and the number of 3 to 4-year-olds who are enrolled throughout the state. Studies show this is a key time in our children’s learning and development.
Viante also focuses on fourth-grade reading and math scores. Research shows that if a student isn’t reading or doing math on grade level by the third grade, it becomes very challenging for those children to catch up and get back on track. Viante utilizes the National Assessment of Education Performance scores, also known as NAEP, from the fourth grade to gauge how our students are performing at the same level as their peers in other states.
Viante also concentrates on the percent of a school’s budget that makes its way to the classroom. State research shows that higher performing school districts allocate more money to the classroom. This funding directly impacts students’ achievement and also includes teacher pay.
Finally, Viante wants to see each child in New Mexico graduate. We want to ensure our students are well prepared, whether they plan to go to college or a career following graduation. As a result, we have chosen to measure high school graduation rates and college readiness through our state’s ACT scores.
New Mexico has been at the bottom of the list for too long. Our kids aren’t getting the education they deserve. Viante’s goal is to keep you informed on what our lawmakers are doing to improve education for all of our children.
